Scaffolding Modern PSR-4 WordPress Plugins with Automated GitHub CI

Stop copying outdated plugin templates. A modern setup requires strict types, composer autoloading, phpcs rulesets, and automated PHPUnit tests on push.

Scaffolding Modern PSR-4 WordPress Plugins with Automated GitHub CI

Why WordPress Plugin Architecture Needs Modern Standards

Many WordPress plugins still resemble code from 2012: procedural functions in a single 2,000-line file, global variables scattered throughout, and zero automated tests. Moving to professional PHP development requires structured PSR-4 autoloading, dependency injection, and static analysis.

Core Tenets of a Modern Plugin

  • Strict Types & Namespaces: Every file begins with declare(strict_types=1); and lives under a vendor namespace.
  • Single Responsibility: Admin settings, CPT registration, REST routes, and frontend assets are separated into discrete, testable classes.
  • Automated Testing: PHPUnit integration tests run against WordPress test databases on every pull request.
  • Static Analysis: PHPStan (level 8) and WordPress Coding Standards (WPCS) run automatically via GitHub Actions.

This is why I built create-wp-plugin-cli—to allow any developer to scaffold a production-grade, CI-ready plugin in under 30 seconds.
